Dr Watson, Miss Morris and Mr Hart took a group of students from Year 7 and 8 to compete in the New College Debating Competition against Cheney and New College School. This is the second year the competition has been held and we went into it with the added pressure of having won last year. One of last year’s competitors – Olivia Ward Jacobs – led the training for the Year 7 students with great skill and commitment.
They had to prepare on debate in advance on the topic of “This House believes the cost of space exploration far outweighs its benefits”. After dinner in New College Hall there was a second debate on the topic “This House believes that young people have never had it so easy”. This time students had less than half hour to prepare their speeches. All our students gave excellent performances.
Erik Moseley was awarded the prize for best speaker in the Oxford Spires team and Olivia was awarded both the prize for the best Oxford Spires summariser and the best overall summariser. In addition we were very excited to win the overall trophy meaning we maintained our 100% record in this competition.
