Library

Set in the old school hall, the Library is a comfortable space in which students can study quietly, do group work, or read for pleasure. We have a growing stock of over 24,000 items, including fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, and newspapers and magazines. We also have a small computer suite of 12 computers with Internet access and a laser printer/photocopier available for use.

The Library is open from 08:15 – 16:00 and students are welcome to use it before and after school, and during break times. Teaching staff also make use of the Library during the school day, for both English lessons and for their students to carry out research for projects. The Poetry Hub is located upstairs, overlooking the main Library. Our writer in residence works in this part with students across all year groups on both poetry and creative writing, producing high quality work that has won the school many poetry awards.

The Library runs the Accelerated Reader Scheme for years 7 & 8. This scheme helps choose books that are the correct reading level for the individual. Not only does the scheme reward students’ success in reading, it also helps support students with comprehension and learning new vocabulary. When students have read a book, or books of the appropriate level, they take a quiz. This tests them on their understanding of the novel, and can judge if they have learnt any new vocabulary. Many students receive 100% if they are reading at the right level and this gains rewards with commendations each time they pass a test.
