To Infinity and Beyond…!

On 7 November a group of Year 7 students had the chance to meet Jim Pawelczyk, the US astronaut who flew aboard the NASA STS-90 Space Shuttle mission. In the University’s packed Department of Anatomy and Physiology, the students heard how Pawelczyk, now a researcher of physiology and Kinesiology, prepared for the mission and how the group of scientists lived in space. With lots of exciting footage of the launch, Pawelczyk explored for his largely 11-year-old audience how the human body copes with space travel.

And why 11 year olds? Pawelcyzk explained to the school students in the audience that they were exactly the age to begin their ambitions to fly in space – when they’d trained – as by that time he believed we would be sending manned space flights to Mars.
