The ESU MACE for Sixth Form debaters

Following the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition, entered by Year 9 and 10 students at OSA, the next step is the MACE, the national debating competition, largely entered by Sixth Form students.  We hosted the first round at OSA last year.

This year our team – Linnet Drury, Felix Henson and Huma Khan – travelled to Abingdon School and joined in an evening of lively debate.  Opposing the motion ‘This House believes that people in the UK should be limited to one flight each a year’, the team argued ably against the team from the host school.  Though Linnet and Felix reached the national final of the ESU Public Speaking in Year 10, and Linnet was invited to join the UK team, they are building up their debate skills still and on this occasion didn’t get through to the area finals.

We look forward to further Sixth Form debating in the Oxford Schools Competition in January.
