On 6th February, 6th further mathematicians in Year 12 & 13 attended a day of engaging and exciting maths talks at the Piccadilly Theatre in London. Featuring several of our favourite internet mathematicians we learnt about the maths underpinning things ranging from laser light shows and card tricks to codebreaking and crowd management at Glastonbury.
We were also shown why sometimes it is good to do maths just because it is beautiful and fun rather than because it solves a particular problem. The Baby Nerds Team had sent a pile of calculators which their mathematical idol Matt Parker very kindly signed. One of the organisers recognised us as being from Oxford Spires and said they were really pleased to see us there as they knew we were the school that had the “small excited people” who clearly loved maths.
